Understanding Surgical Risks

All surgical procedures carry some risks and potential complications. While these vary depending on the type of surgery, your overall health, and other individual factors, it is important to understand what these risks may include.

General Surgical Risks

Common risks associated with most surgical procedures include:

  • Bleeding – This may occur during or after surgery and, in some cases, require additional treatment.
  • Infection – At the surgical site, which may need antibiotics or further medical care.
  • Blood clots – Such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), particularly with longer procedures or limited mobility after surgery.
  • Reactions to anaesthesia – Including nausea, vomiting, or, rarely, more serious complications.
  • Pain or discomfort – Varying in severity and managed with appropriate medications as advised by your care team.
  • Scarring – All surgeries result in some degree of scarring, with the appearance varying between individuals.
  • Delayed wound healing – Particularly in patients with certain medical conditions or lifestyle factors affecting healing.

Procedure-Specific Risks

Some surgeries carry specific risks related to the type of procedure. For example:

  • Breast surgery – Changes in breast sensation, asymmetry, or fat necrosis (firm areas caused by changes in fat tissue).
  • Endocrine surgery – Changes in calcium levels following parathyroid surgery or changes in voice after thyroid surgery, though these are not common.
  • Skin cancer surgery: Scarring at the surgical site, changes in skin sensation, wound healing issues, or incomplete removal requiring further treatment. In some cases, there may be changes to the appearance of the area, particularly if reconstruction is required.

Dr Chen will discuss the specific risks associated with your planned procedure in detail during your consultation.

Individual Risk Factors

Factors such as age, general health, smoking status, and other medical conditions can influence your risk of complications. Please inform your surgical team of your full medical history and any medications or supplements you are taking so they can plan your care appropriately.

Discussing Your Questions

If you have concerns about the risks associated with your surgery, please discuss them with Dr Chen. Understanding the risks, benefits, and alternatives will help you make an informed decision about your care.
